SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SEPT. 12

Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14; I Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 15:1-32.

Jesus' invitation to follow Him is addressed to us. We are Catholic citizens of a wealthy, powerful nation facing many questions about its identity and role in the waning years of a troubled century. We are members of a community of faith blessed with many human and material resources yet often uncertain about how to sustain and use them. Stewardship is a disciple's response.

~ From the Pastor’s Pen ~

1) Jesus has a tough message this week on being followers of Jesus. Discipleship, according to Jesus, has a price; it is not cheap grace. God comes first; all else second, including our family and possessions.

2) Passing on and living the faith is a responsibility of and challenge for parents. It takes a cooperative effort by all to make Jesus the center of our lives. An important way to live the faith is attending church on the weekend. You become a role model for the children as well.

Can you recall the last time you had a moment for yourself? To think, to pray, to relax, to be quiet? Now is the time to do something for yourself and God. Come with other women from your parish for the women's retreat on September 28-30.  Join us for a time of rest, renewal, and spiritual nourishment at King's House Retreat and Renewal Center in Belleville. Contact Betty J. Kocher (395-3179) for further information or to register.

“We would like to thank everyone for the prayers, cards and thoughts at the time of the loss of our Mother. Also a special thank you to Father Jerry for all his support, the music at mass and the wonderful meal prepared by the women of the parish.”      - From the Christina A. Kocher Family

Labor Day Weekend: Each of us works in some way and benefits from our own or others’ work.  The Catholic teaching is clear on the rights of people to decent and productive work, fair wages, private property, economic initiative, and the freedom to organize.

CSMA Update: I am asking you to consider a donation to meet our parish goal for Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal. As of now we are at $14,932.13 with 131 donors.  We are $3,165.81 behind goal. To those who have not contributed, why not give something to this worthy cause?  Sr. Thea Bowman Catholic School almost closed this year due to lack of funding. Sr. Thea is not supported by a parish like ours. All the Catholic Schools in E. St. Louis consolidated into Sr. Thea a number of years ago. Although Sr. Thea’s main income is grants and donations, CSMA funding is also critical for this diocesan grade school.  Lack of support for CSMA has unfortunately affected Sr. Thea.  Meeting our CSMA goal is a vote for needed ministry.  (I will present later a plan and challenge of what is being done by priests and parishes to raise funds for Sr. Thea this year.)

Teutopolis Monastery Museum, adjacent to St. Francis Church in Teutopolis, IL will be open to the public for tours on Sunday, September 5. The museum is housed on the second floor in the former Franciscan Novitiate. It is known for its collection of articles used by the Franciscan Friars and early pioneers of the area. Admission fee is $3 for adults and $1 for children. Hours are 12:30PM–4:00PM. The museum is open on the first Sunday of the months April thru November.
